Benefits of Metal Roofing

In addition to protecting your home against environmental factors, metal roofing has additional benefits such as providing longevity and energy efficiency. Although the initial cost of a metal roof is more than traditional asphalt, it's longer lifespan makes it the natural choice. Let's take a look at a few of the benefits of using metal roofing on your home.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY

Metal roofing can reflect heat to reduce your cooling costs in the summer as well as hold heat in the home to minimize the demand on your home heating system during the winter months.

LONGEVITY

You can expect a properly installed metal roof to last 50+ years! That is 2-3x longer than traditional roofing materials. Asphalt begins to deteriorate as soon as it is exposed to weather but metal will last for decades.

SOLAR PANEL COMPATIBILITY

Metal roofs are the perfect platform for solar panels due to the long lifespan of quality metal. Often, solar panel mounts for metal roofing do not require any penetration of the roof itself!

Is It Time For a New Roof?

Deciding on the right time to re-roof your home can be stressful. It’s a project that will require a financial investment, which is never something a homeowner looks forward to. The stress of finding a qualified installer, accommodating the timeline involved in a project of this size, as well as the impact it may have on your daily life, can make starting a roofing project seem very unappealing. However, all of that can pale in comparison when you consider the consequences of waiting too long.

An aging or damaged roof may cause structural damage to your home, introduce mold and mildew, or degrade the overall integrity of the house itself. The combined costs of repairing any of those issues far outweigh the preventative measure of re-roofing promptly. What should you look for when deciding if you need a new roof? Let's take a closer look.

Curling, cracking, broken or otherwise damaged shingles
Unexplained water present in your home or attic
Missing shingles or those that have become loose
Damaged or missing flashing and other protective materials
Exposed or raised fasteners on your existing roof

Frequently Asked Questions

Here you can see a few of the most common questions consumers have regarding metal roofing. Don’t see the answer to your question here? Contact us today to speak with a metal roofing and siding expert. We can help guide your project to success.

  • Metal is considered the most environmentally friendly and sustainable roofing material available. Metal roofs are 100% recyclable and are made with a minimum of 25% recycled material, depending on the type of metal.

  • Metal roof systems in most cases weigh between 1 to 3 pounds per square foot. The actual weight is dependent upon metal gauge and profile of the panel. Metal roof systems are considered a lightweight roof covering compared to their counterparts. The following illustrates the different types of other roofing materials and their respective weights per square foot:

    Asphalt Shingle: 2 – 3.5lbs psf
    Textured Asphalt Shingle: 3.5 – 5lbs psf
    Wood Shingles/Shakes: 3.5 – 4.5lbs psf
Clay or Concrete Tile: 5.5 – 10lbs psf

  • Asphalt shingles range from $70-$160 per square (or 100 square feet) and metal roofing ranges from $120 up to $900 per square. However, metal roofs are a much greater value because they last 50-plus years, more than two to three times longer than other materials. This will save you money with reduced replacement and repair costs.

  • A metal roof can withstand decades of abuse from extreme weather like high winds, heavy snow, hailstorms, and even wildfires. Metal roofing has a 120-mph wind rating, meaning it can withstand wind gusts up to 120 miles per hour – equal to an F2 tornado. Under high wind conditions, metal roofing systems have wind resistance and uplift resistance that is above the new building code requirements. Naturally, this gives architects and engineers a sense of relief in that they can use the best material to meet those criteria.

In locations that see heavy snow, metal roofing has been the choice of homeowners for years. It sheds snow fast, which protects the structural integrity of the roof. And it can eliminate ice damming at the eaves, so water can’t back up and collect under the roof then leak into your home. If you live in a part of the country that is prone to wildfires, metal roofing can protect your home should burning embers land on your roof. In fact, you should check with your insurance agent as it’s quite likely that the installation of metal roofing will save you money on your homeowners insurance.
